As we look ahead to Friday 6 March, we’re delving into each of the Award categories and the shortlisted nominees to see who might lift one of the coveted London Sport Awards.
Here, we take an in-depth look at The Impact of Elite Sport Award:
Who is in the running?
The Impact of Elite Sport Award celebrates the major events, clubs, teams, organisations or individuals that use elite sport’s reach and influence to inspire people to increase their levels of physical activity.
Here’s who made the lists:
West Ham United
West Ham United’s Players’ Project community programme focuses on using the power of elite sport and personal storytelling to improve economic impact, social integration, help people overcome barriers and motivate, educate, and inspire.
The club launched its Players’ Project in November 2018 and has been independently acknowledged as the most ambitious and integrated community programme ever created by a Premier League Club and delivered in conjunction with the Club’s Foundation.
The project sees each of the men’s, women’s and academy players acting as ambassadors for an area of community outreach which is important to them personally, to create life-changing experiences which bring hope, inspire change and deliver opportunities.
Chelsea Champions
A project that offers schools the opportunity to work exclusively with the Chelsea Foundation, providing a full-time Project Officer to deliver a unique programme which aims to build capacity and coping mechanisms in young people, all tailored to the individual needs of the school.
Within each school, Chelsea provide a full-time Project Officer to deliver a unique programme which aims to build capacity and coping mechanisms in young people, all tailored to the individual needs of the school.
The club weaves together a packed timetable of physical activity sessions, mentoring, leadership and volunteering activities, Youth Voice and Wellbeing Campaigns. Chelsea Champions is growing from strength to strength and looking to expand in the near future.
Richmond Rugby Community Programme
The Richmond Rugby Community Department is run in partnership with Community Group Ltd and was launched in July 2017.
Its aim is to engage with local schools, colleges and to support local community initiatives. Most of its coaches are also current male and female elite players at the club – enabling the department to offer schools a unique coaching resource with high levels of playing experience and expertise.
All partner schools took part in community events at various senior men’s and women’s team fixtures throughout the course of last season (2018/19). Last academic year (2018/19) saw the department coach over 1,000 children for 1,638 hours in schools.
